Lawang Sea Mineral Cream 100g

Why Lawang Oil?  The oil distilled from the bark of the Cinamomum Caliliwan has been used by Indigenous peoples on the two Islands of Indonesia where it is found, for centuries.  They used it mainly for arthritic or rheumatic complaints.  I am told that the leaves when bruised and rubbed on the skin have a soothing effect, but, of course, that is only anecdotal evidence.

Back in the old Dutch East India Company days, the distillate was shipped overseas to Europe for perfumery and its perceived medicinal properties. The Company held it in such high esteem that they forbade anyone to distill it, other than themselves, or receive a fine of $500 which was a huge amount! (The Asiatic Annual Register, 1800). These days it is distilled by Indonesians and is part of a thriving local industry in essential oils.

Twenty or so years ago, our founder the late, Gerry Amena, started making a sea mineral cream with Lawang Oil in it and sold it mainly to practitioners and massage therapists. Whether his experience in the Medical Corps of the Dutch Army based in Indonesia in the 1950’s had anything to do with it, I am not sure. It is said to have analgesic, penetrating and soothing properties*
